Speak German was my biggest challenge

Do you speak Deutsch?

Speak German! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes when trying to speak German and say your first Sentences, but I know what you guys are thinking about: Where to speak German when someone does not live in a German-speaking country and of course with whom?

Well here comes the role of Babbel live. It just brings speaking to your door and “speak in Deutsch” won’t be a huge challenge any longer!

I remember myself in Tunisia sitting in front of the mirror and trying to introduce myself in German and trying to feel satisfied with my German Grammar. Some days, I record videos with my phone, I upload them, and I try every day to replay my recording and figure out how to improve my pronunciation and make fewer mistakes. This was a pain in the rear guys and time-consuming.

With Babble live you won’t have to face this struggle and you will have the chance to enter conversations in German. OK, I know that you are aware that trying to speak a language is a fundamental phase of learning it, but allow me to share a personal experience to highlight why speaking German is so important and why it is a big challenge, not only for me but for many others.

On the first of January 2019, I travelled to Germany specifically to Essen, a big German city in the middle-western part of the country. I landed at Frankfurt airport and took the train to Essen.

After 4 hours of waiting and having my first cultural chocs. I arrived at the train station, but I didn’t have any clue how to use public transportation and head to my destination, so I decided to take the cab, which was waiting outside next to the train station. I approached the taxi driver and said hi and tried to explain to him to take me to my destination in German. The guy looked at me and said something fast in German and I could only understand “Ich” (Which is “I” in German) from it, then I lost my confidence in speaking again and I got confused.

Luckily the taxi driver understood that it was the first time from my behaviour, he smiled and just repeated: “address please”…

OK, I got my nerves again on the way to the Hotel and thought next time I should say “langsamer bitte” (Slowly please). I was at the reception, where an amazingly hot German receptionist was talking on the phone., I approached her and asked: “Bitte die Schlüssel” (The keys please). She looked at me, smiled and invaded my hearing capacity with a bunch of German Words and questions. I couldn’t understand anything, despite the fact, that I had spent 3 Months learning German back in my home country Tunisia…

I looked at the hot receptionist and replied “langsamer bitte” and she said “wat langsam” (What slow in middle eastern german accent), then I felt confused again and lost the confidence to keep talking in German, so I gave up and switched to English.

“I can t speak German”, I gasped and then started my fight with “speak Deutsch” in Germany.

With babble live you will reduce the language choc, that you will face once arriving in a German-speaking country.

Now before explaining how babble live works, I want to drive your attention to some scientific facts and research done in reputable universities, which demonstrate why speaking a new language will make a difference in your learning curve.

“It is speaking that activates all linguistic elements of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary at the same time.”

According to research done at the University of Wisconsin Madison. New language learners, who tend to practise speaking can learn fasten than the ones who only do grammar and comprehension exercises
